Romford 2, Barton Rovers 1

Boro kicked off their FA Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Southern League side Barton Rovers to set up a home tie in the next round against Baldock Town.

Early pressure from Romford forced two corners, from the first of which Freddie Tandon had a header cleared off the line and when Jonathon Evans crossed from the second, Tandon headed narrowly wide at the far post.

Barton’s Jadell Brown had a shot that was off target after five minutes but the visitors had goalkeeper Matt Boylan to thank for beating out Jaxon Brown’s shot almost immediately afterwards. There was no denying Brown after eight minutes however, as the Boro striker ran onto Ben Sargent’s pass and fired a shot past Boylan.

Ben McCrow took advantage of a defensive error to get a shot away but Boylan blocked and Barton then broke quickly with Lucas Jordan creating a shooting chance that fortunately for Boro, was off target.

Jaxon Brown went into referee Sam Craker’s notebook for simulation after going down in the box after 38 minutes, but when he was brought down by goalkeeper Boylan just before the interval, the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Jonathon Evans stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to double Boro’s lead.

After some presumably strong words in the away dressing room at half-time, Barton came at Boro strongly after the interval, but despite having plenty of possession, they were largely held at bay by the Boro back line. The visitors got one back after 64 minutes however, when Connor Bernhardt’s low shot from outside the box found the net, and had Tyrone Shiham’s shot crept under the bar rather than crashing against it shortly after that, they might have levelled.

Despite Barton throwing Boylan into the action in the game’s closing stages with the keeper coming up for a couple of corners, Romford’s defence held firm to progress to the next round. Before that tie however, Romford face Woodford Town at Mayesbrook Park in the Essex Senior League on Tuesday evening and then, on Friday evening play Ilford in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase.
