100 Firefighters Tackle Major Grass Fire in Rainham
Around 100 firefighters were called to tackle a large grass fire near Acer Avenue in Rainham yesterday evening.
Fifteen fire engines attended the incident after the London Fire Brigade received the first of 12 emergency calls at 7.36pm.
Approximately four hectares of grassland were engulfed by the fire, with crews working for more than two hours to bring the blaze under control. The fire was declared under control at 9.56pm.
Firefighters used specialised wildfire beaters to help extinguish the flames. The equipment consists of a long handle fitted with a flat piece of rubber, which is used to beat the flames, depriving them of oxygen while cooling the fire.
Due to the large amount of smoke produced by the blaze, local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed. Motorists travelling through affected areas were also urged to keep their windows wound up, close air vents and switch off air conditioning systems to prevent smoke from entering their vehicles.
Crews from New Cross, West Norwood, Romford, Dockhead, Orpington, Sidcup and surrounding fire stations attended the incident.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
