‘I Don’t Know How Much Longer I Can Put Up With This’: Rainham Residents Deal With Another Summer of Smoke and Smog

As another spell of hot weather grips Havering, many Rainham residents say they are preparing for another week of waking up to smoke, strong odours and a haze hanging over their neighbourhoods. While many people across the borough can throw open their windows to enjoy the summer sunshine, some residents in Rainham say they have to stop and ask themselves one question first – is it safe to open the windows?

One Havering Daily reader summed up the frustration felt by many when they shared their experience after smoke was reported in the area once again.

“It’s the 23rd of July 2026. I’ve just had to shut all my windows after bringing in my washing (that now reeks of smoke). It’s absolutely choking me. I already suffer from poor chest problems. I don’t know how much longer I can put up with this.”

It is a message that echoes the concerns repeatedly raised by residents living near the Launders Lane area.

Many say their summer months are very different to those experienced elsewhere in the borough. Instead of opening windows to let fresh air into their homes, they say they first check outside to see if there is smoke in the air or a strong smell drifting across their streets.

Some residents have described being woken during the early hours by what they say is a powerful odour. Looking outside, they report seeing what they describe as a smog or haze over the area. Others say the smell seeps into their homes even when windows and doors are closed.

For those with existing respiratory conditions, residents say the recurring smoke and odours add to their worries, particularly during periods of hot weather when keeping windows shut can make homes increasingly uncomfortable.

Campaigners say the issue has gone on for years and that many residents now feel they have reached breaking point.

As previously reported by The Havering Daily, local residents have now instructed solicitors to explore potential legal action relating to the recurring smoke and fumes, with lawyers currently reviewing possible legal avenues on their behalf.

For those living in affected parts of Rainham, they say this is no longer simply an inconvenience but something that impacts their daily lives throughout the summer months.

Residents continue to call for a long-term solution, saying they simply want to enjoy the same quality of life as everyone else in the borough – to wake up on a warm summer’s morning, open their windows and breathe fresh air without fear of what may be outside.
