Fox Cub’s Miracle Escape: Harold Hill Deer Aid Helps Save Trapped Cub After Dramatic Rescue

A tiny fox cub who was fighting for his life after becoming trapped by his neck in a gap just inches wide has made a remarkable recovery and has now been released back into the wild thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Harold Hill Deer Aid, the London Fire Brigade and South Essex Wildlife Hospital.

The dramatic rescue began in the early hours of the morning when Harold Hill Deer Aid was called to an incident in Romford after reports of a fox cub crying out in distress.

When rescuers arrived, they discovered the young fox wedged by his neck between a concrete pillar and a jagged brick wall. Trapped in a gap barely the width of a thumb, the frightened cub is believed to have been stuck for several agonising hours.

Exhausted, barely breathing and with severe swelling to his neck, it was clear that every second counted.

The dedicated volunteers. Jan and Shantel from Harold Hill Deer Aid immediately began working to free the cub, but the sharp brickwork surrounding him meant any attempt to pull him free could have caused catastrophic injuries.

Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the charity called upon the London Fire Brigade, with whom they have successfully worked alongside on previous wildlife rescues.

Working together, firefighters carefully used hydraulic rescue equipment to widen the gap little by little while the wildlife rescuers supported and protected the exhausted cub. Inch by inch, they gently lifted him clear until, after a tense rescue, he was finally freed.

Within moments of being released, the tiny fox took a deep gasp of air before being rushed to South Essex Wildlife Hospital, where he received emergency veterinary treatment and around-the-clock specialist care.

Against the odds, the cub has gone on to make an incredible recovery.

Just over a week later, after receiving outstanding rehabilitation from the dedicated team at South Essex Wildlife Hospital, he was strong enough to be released back into the area where he was found, giving him the chance to reunite with his family in the wild.

For the volunteers at Harold Hill Deer Aid, the rescue was one they will never forget.

“After experiencing so many heartbreaking and tragic moments, it is rescues like this that warm our hearts and give us the motivation to carry on. Seeing an animal that was so close to losing its life return to the wild reminds us why every rescue, every call-out and every effort is worthwhile.”

The rescue is another example of the incredible work carried out by Harold Hill Deer Aid, whose volunteers respond day and night to wildlife in desperate need across Havering and beyond. Their compassion, determination and willingness to never give up have saved countless animals over the years, often in extremely difficult and emotional circumstances.

This remarkable outcome was only possible because of the outstanding teamwork between Harold Hill Deer Aid, the London Fire Brigade and South Essex Wildlife Hospital. Each organisation played a vital role in giving the young fox a second chance at life.

For a cub that looked as though he had almost no chance of surviving, the ending could not have been happier.

Back where he belongs, wild and free, this brave little fox is once again exploring the countryside—a heartwarming reminder of the extraordinary difference that dedicated wildlife rescuers make every single day.
