Heatwave Takes Its Toll on Havering as Sinkholes Hit the Borough.

As temperatures continue to soar across Havering, questions are being asked about whether the borough’s roads are beginning to feel the strain of the prolonged heat.

In just a matter of days, two separate road incidents have prompted concern among residents and motorists, with many wondering if the extreme weather is starting to impact the condition of the local road network.

Earlier this week, South Street in Romford was partially closed after a sinkhole appeared near Romford railway station. Havering Council responded swiftly, sending emergency response officers and Marlborough Highways to the scene to make the area safe while engineers began investigating the cause and assessing the repairs needed.

Now, residents have also reported a sinkhole at the bottom of Mawney Road, near the RUSSC, adding to growing concerns about the effects of the recent heatwave on roads across the borough.

Although investigations are continuing and the exact causes have yet to be confirmed, prolonged periods of extreme heat can cause road surfaces to soften, expand and weaken. Combined with heavy traffic and ageing infrastructure, these conditions can increase the risk of cracks, subsidence and localised road failures.

The latest incidents come as Havering has already been dealing with significant transport disruption, Gallows Corner and ongoing major roadworks that have frustrated motorists for months.

Residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns, with many questioning whether the borough’s roads are struggling to cope with the increasingly frequent periods of extreme weather.

With forecasters warning that hotter summers are becoming more common, there are growing calls for continued investment in maintaining and strengthening the borough’s infrastructure to help it withstand future heatwaves.

For now, Havering Council continues to monitor affected locations and carry out investigations where necessary, with safety remaining the priority for residents and road users.

As the mercury continues to rise, many will be hoping the borough’s roads can weather the heat just as well as its residents.
