Havering Gives Standing Ovation To ‘People’s Mayor’ Sue Ospreay After Incredible £88,000 Charity Total Revealed
There are mayors and then there is Sue Ospreay.
Yesterday evening at Havering’s first Full Council meeting at the Town Hall in Romford after the local election, former Mayor Councillor Sue Ospreay received something very few ever achieve a standing ovation from the entire chamber.
As the borough’s new administration officially assembled, Sue stepped down from her mayoral role after what many are calling one of the most loved and memorable mayoral years Havering has ever seen.
But the biggest moment of the evening was still to come.
Councillor Barry Mugglestone revealed the final amount Sue had raised for her chosen charity, the MCA Trust for Children.
An incredible £88,000.
As the figure was announced, the chamber erupted into applause with councillors, guests and attendees rising to their feet in recognition of an extraordinary achievement.
When Sue first became Mayor, she promised she would be “The People’s Mayor.”
She did far more than that.
She captured hearts right across Havering.
From community events and charity fundraisers to supporting residents of all ages, Sue brought warmth, energy, humour and compassion into the role every single day. She was never a mayor who stood on the sidelines. She joined in, she connected with people and she made residents feel valued.
Her passion for Havering shone through in everything she did.
Sue also introduced the Mayor’s Merit awards, celebrating local heroes across the borough with her now famous bear badges for those who had done “bear good” in the community.
It perfectly summed up Sue thoughtful, fun and completely devoted to recognising others.
Her mayoral year included leading Havering to victory at the Lord Mayor of London’s New Year’s Day Parade, hosting incredible community events and tirelessly championing charities and local causes.
But above all else, Sue brought people together.
Many across Havering now affectionately describe her as a true “Havering Treasure.”
Thank you Sue Ospreay for pouring your heart and soul into this borough and into the role of Mayor.
You are deeply appreciated, hugely respected and very much loved across Havering.
