Havering Green Candidate Daljit Singh Jutla-today writes in the Havering Daily:

Local Green candidates across all Havering wards want to rebuild community connection, because without it we cannot tackle the growing pressures facing working families. We want to strengthen existing local action groups and help create new ones where they are needed, bringing people together to solve problems collectively.

Poverty is no longer a distant issue. It is quietly reshaping everyday life for working families across Havering. As the poverty threshold rises, more people who are working hard are finding themselves slipping closer to the edge, often without realising how many others are in the same position.

Recent UK data shows that relative poverty has been increasing among working households, driven by rising living costs, stagnant wages, and housing pressures. When the most severe forms of poverty are not addressed, the pressure spreads outward and makes life harder for the working and lower middle classes who are already stretched thin. This is not just an economic issue, it is a community issue.

Too many of us feel isolated in this struggle and believe we are alone. That belief creates division and prevents collective action. In reality, many of your neighbours are facing similar challenges. Yet we walk past local issues and expect someone else, often the council, to fix them, despite shrinking resources and limited funding.

We can do better together! Stronger communities are built when residents take part by reporting issues, supporting local initiatives, and even picking up a broom or raising a concern online. Small actions create momentum.

This does not end with reading this article. Start today, speak to a neighbour, report an issue, join a local group, or take part in a community effort. If you want to see this approach championed locally, vote Green. Real change begins with all of us.
