With local elections taking place across London on 7 May, and the pre-election period now begun, local London Cycling Campaign group Havering Cyclists has today launched its Streets for Cycling campaign asking the potential next leaders of Havering Council to commit to building high-quality cycles routes where Transport for London has identified a need for them.

Transport for London has already identified the routes that will have the most impact on encouraging people to cycle locally and will also provide the funding to create routes that meet their quality criteria.

A safe, connected cycle network in Havering would enable thousands of people to switch to cycling for local journeys and reduce the borough’s traffic congestion, especially at school run hours. Routes radiating out from Romford would together create a basic safe network, allowing safe cycle access to Romford from town centres like Harold Hill, Hornchurch, Upminster and Collier Row, and providing safe cycle connections to Ilford, Barking and Central London. Two high priority cycle routes identified by TfL would run from Romford towards Ilford in the west and towards Dagenham in the south to support longer trips.

And the cycle network could include a mix of low traffic streets and protected cycle tracks on main roads.

Spokesperson for Havering cyclists. Terry Hughes, said ‘Building the basic cycle network identified by Transport for London would be a game-changer.  Thousands of local car trips every day could be switched to cycling in Havering if only people felt safe enough.  We’d start to see children cycling to school, and more women, elderly people and people with disabilities discovering the freedom, convenience, health – and joy! that a safe, joined up cycle network brings.  And the more people cycle, the more we will reduce traffic congestion, road danger and harmful pollution.”

Havering Cyclists is encouraging local residents to support them by emailing local party leaders via https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/streets-for-cycling/
