Dagenham and Rainham MP Supports Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill Ending ‘Fleecehold’.
Margaret Mullane- the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham has given her full support to the introduction by the Government to the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill. In particular, she has welcomed that before the Bill proceeds through Parliament to become law, there is a period of pre-legislative scrutiny. This gives leaseholders the opportunity to submit their views on shaping the future law.
Margaret invites local leaseholders to make submissions using this link online survey to help shape the future law. The deadline for comments is 11:59pm 29 February.
In addition, Margaret as well as fully supporting strengthening the rights of leaseholders to bring an end to leasehold, is also making representations for the legislation to give leaseholders the right of full disclosure by building owners of information about the construction of their buildings along with robust regulation of property managing companies.
Margaret said “As well as these points there are two other matters I want to see in the new law. The first relates to service charges, too often these are opaque and highly questionable. I want complete transparency on service charges and fully itemized billing.
The second concerns where residents on housing estates have to pay service charges to managing agents to maintain roads and other public areas that have not been adopted by the Council. I want residents to have the right to hire and fire the company that manages the public areas.”
Margaret added “I’m proud that this Government is getting on with giving leaseholders the right to take control and end ‘fleecehold’”.
