Havering Comes Together to Thank A Real Community Copper Who Retires After 25 Years Service.
Havering came together yesterday to honour one of its most respected officers as Sergeant Abdul Basit retired after 25 years of dedicated service. Tributes poured in from senior officers, civic leaders and local residents, all united in gratitude for a man widely described as “a pillar of the community.”
Sergeant Basit was a much-loved local community officer, who leaves after serving a quarter of a century of service. Based in Rainham, Sergeant Basit was a respected and trusted Safer Neighbourhood officer who worked tirelessly to support residents, making a real difference alongside PCSOs Brian and Julia.
Havering’s Mayor, Councillor Sue Ospreay, personally visited Hornchurch police station, joined by Neighbourhoods Superintendent Brind, to thank Sergeant Basit for his dedication and service. He was presented with a certificate in recognition of his commitment to the community.
Councillor Ospreay was joined by Superintendent Brind, Inspector Connolly and members of the public, all coming together to show their appreciation for an officer who has given so much to Havering.
Superintendent Sharon Brind told the Havering Daily:
“Today, the community came together to honour Sergeant Abdul Basit, who is retiring after more than two decades of exemplary service. Known as a pillar of the community, Sergeant Basit has been celebrated for his unwavering dedication, resilience, and professionalism throughout his career.
Over the years, Sergeant Basit has gone above and beyond in his role, building strong relationships and fostering trust between law enforcement and residents. His commitment to public safety and community engagement has touched countless lives, earning him the respect of colleagues and partners alike.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, several senior partners and community leaders attended today’s farewell gathering, underscoring the profound impact he has had on the area. Their presence reflects the deep appreciation for his efforts and the legacy he leaves behind.
As Sergeant Basit embarks on the next chapter of his life, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his years of service and wish him continued success and happiness in the future.”
Inspector Connolly told the Havering Daily:
“Sergeant Basit was a pillar of the community policing team for Rainham. He will be missed by myself and his colleagues. I wish him all the best of luck in his future and retirement.”
