Designers Bring Colour To Their Local Romford Shopping Centre.
Romford based creative duo GEO JAM have been chosen to create new large scale colourful and quirky murals for The Mercury in Romford, which were installed just in time for the new year. Both living and working in the area, Jamie and Georgia pitched against national illustration agencies for the chance to add character to their local area, and were chosen for capturing the multi-faceted day to day life of a shopping destination.
Moving into 2026 with a fresh look, you may have noticed more changes at The Mercury over the past months, with the most notable being the improvements made to the car park. However there has also been renewed seating, freshly painted walls, and a new Christmas look; with the centre’s owners promising more positive changes to come over the course of the new year.
This latest update is making a statement across the whole centre, with younger shoppers already stopping to take a selfie or tick tock with specific areas of the design.
“The more you look, the more you see,” said Natalie Bays, Centre Manager. “You can spot planes jetting off on holidays with Tui, McDonald’s fries on some of the walls, Lumiere cinema tickets, Mecca Bingo balls and even a café Gusto ‘fried breakfast’ on the columns as you enter from the bus stops at Mercury Gardens. This is the best thing about working with local creatives – they understand the people that they represent on a much deeper level and easily add soul and a bit of fun with their artwork.”
Not to forget a nod to the centre’s past and present, with its iconic dome, and a disco ball placed in the spot where you may have left ‘Ritzy’s’ or ‘Pulse’ back in the day to pick up a taxi (now outside ASDA!).
The designs are in several locations across the mall and Georgia and Jamie from GEO JAM urge you to come and see how they perceive The Mercury.
“We have really enjoyed working on this project and bringing a fresh set of illustrations to The Mercury Shopping Centre. The designs are full of local references and nods to the shops and activities around the centre, and we hope visitors enjoy spotting all the little details themselves – GEO JAM”
GEO JAM work across the UK professionally in fields of both architecture and design. You may also have attended a creative workshop with them locally too.
