Turmeric and Ginger: Winter Powerhouses for Your Body
Health and Wellbeing coach Francesca Lilleystone writes her weekly column in the Havering Daily.
Winter can take a toll on our bodies, with colds, coughs, and low energy all too common. Nutrition can play a vital role in keeping your body strong, and two ingredients that really shine in this season are turmeric and ginger.
We hear a lot about their benefits, but what exactly do they do?
Turmeric is a bright yellow spice found in most supermarkets, either in powder form or as a fresh root. It’s a powerhouse for your body, packed with curcumin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Turmeric can help support your joints, boost overall wellbeing, and protect the body from chronic inflammation. However, there’s a vital tip: for turmeric to work effectively, it needs to be combined with black pepper. Black pepper contains piperine, which enhances the absorption of curcumin. Some products, like those at Holland & Barrett, already include black pepper for convenience. Turmeric is versatile you can add it to drinks, smoothies, or meals for an easy daily boost.
Ginger is another winter favourite, known for its warming, slightly spicy flavour. Ginger is also a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It can help relieve chesty coughs, clear mucus, support digestion, and strengthen the immune system. Pairing ginger with pineapple in juices can be particularly effective for soothing respiratory issues. Like turmeric, ginger is simple to add to daily meals and drinks fresh or powdered, in teas, soups, or smoothies.
For those who enjoy making their own fruit juices, even a small addition of turmeric or ginger can enhance the drink while giving your body extra winter protection. These two ingredients act like a nutritional shield, helping to support your immune system and overall wellbeing during the colder months.
Incorporating turmeric and ginger into your diet is easy, tasty, and highly beneficial. Whether in warm golden milk, a fruity smoothie, or a hearty winter soup, they provide your body with extra padding against inflammation and seasonal illness.
Eat well, be well, and let turmeric and ginger help you stay strong this winter.
