Festive cheer fills Mardyke Community Centre as seniors enjoy Christmas lunch
The Mardyke Community Centre once again became a place of warmth, music and togetherness as it hosted its annual senior citizen Christmas lunch, welcoming more than 60 elderly residents from the local community for a special festive celebration. The event brought neighbours together to enjoy good food, live performances and a shared sense of community at one of the most important times of the year.
The much loved annual lunch has become a highlight in the calendar for many older residents, particularly those who may otherwise spend the festive period alone. Guests were treated to a full three course meal, with a choice of meats generously provided free of charge by Hawkins Butchers. The family run business is a long established Havering butcher, well known locally for its high quality produce and ongoing support of community events.

Additional support for the lunch came from a range of sponsors including Tropical Sun, The Havering Daily, the MYCA Fund Raising Committee, Rainham Food Bank and members of the local community who donated time, resources and festive spirit. Volunteers worked throughout the day to prepare the hall, serve meals and ensure every guest felt welcomed and cared for.

A special moment during the afternoon came when pupils from Newtons Primary School performed Christmas songs for the audience. Their choir filled the centre with festive music, drawing smiles and applause from residents.

Centre Manager Lesley Blowers said the event would not be possible without the combined efforts of volunteers, sponsors and a local school. “This lunch is all about community. I would like to thank our incredible volunteers, our generous, long-time sponsors and Newtons Primary School for their beautiful singing. Their support helps us give our senior residents a day that makes them feel valued, included and remembered at Christmas.”

Centre Staff, Local Councillors, and Tropical Sun staff helped serve the food to the elderly. Tropical Sun have been a long term sponsor of the annual lunch.
The Mardyke Community Centre has long played a key role in supporting residents of all ages, hosting activities, support groups and social events throughout the year. The annual Christmas lunch reflects the centre’s wider mission to tackle isolation and strengthen community ties across the area.
For many attendees, the afternoon was about more than just a meal. It was a chance to chat, laugh and share memories, reminding everyone present that community spirit remains strong in Havering.
