Havering Council is set to take a serious step forward in the £multi million Bridge Close regeneration plan, as Cabinet members prepare to review a proposal to force the sale of land through a Compulsory Purchase Order. The move could clear the way for new homes, a primary school and a major redevelopment project, but it also raises big questions about whether affected residents will receive fair compensation and whether compulsory purchase is the right route forward.

If approved, the order would allow the Council to acquire all land needed to progress the scheme. Plans for the Bridge Close site include hundreds of new homes, a new health centre, improved public spaces and better links to Romford town centre. A new three form entry primary school is also part of the vision.

The proposal is being put forward to ensure the scheme can finally progress. Bridge Close has been earmarked for redevelopment for years, yet progress has repeatedly stalled as land ownership and negotiations continued in the background. The Council now appears ready to accelerate the project.

The Cabinet will meet on Wednesday 10 December at 7pm where members will discuss whether to proceed with the order.

Councillor Graham Williamson, Cabinet Member for Development and Regeneration, said the order is a necessary step to unlock the project. The Bridge Close regeneration scheme is a key part of our vision to transform Romford into a thriving, modern town centre. Making this Compulsory Purchase Order is an important step to ensure we can deliver much needed homes, improved public spaces and better connections for our community. He added that the scheme would bring investment and create a place where both residents and businesses could flourish.

But while the plans aim to breathe new life into the area, many will now be watching closely to see whether those affected by the compulsory purchase receive fair treatment and market value for their property.

The outcome of Wednesday’s meeting will determine whether the Council moves forward with the legal process.
