Rainham Remembers: Plaque Unveiled for Doctor Who Meant Everything to His Community.

A permanent tribute has now been placed at Rainham Health Centre in honour of much-loved GP Dr Abdul-Razaq Abdullah, remembered by many as a gentle giant who dedicated decades of his life to caring for the community.

Former colleagues, NHS representatives, members of the Patient Participation Group and the Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane, gathered yesterday at the practice Dr Abdullah founded to unveil a memorial plaque just days before the fifth anniversary of his passing.

Dr Abdullah died on 8 December 2020 at Queen’s Hospital after contracting Covid-19. He was 68.

Originally from Iraq, Dr Abdullah moved to the UK in 1985 and went on to serve the NHS for more than 30 years. He first worked at Oldchurch Hospital in Romford before opening Rainham Health Centre in Upminster Road South, where he became a hugely respected figure among local families and fellow clinicians.

His dedication and gentle manner earned him a reputation few forget. Since his passing, thousands of pounds have been raised in his name, and now the memorial plaque ensures his contribution will be permanently recognised at the place where he made such a difference.

Members of the Patient Participation Group pushed for a lasting tribute and received support from MP Margaret Mullane, who funded the plaque, as well as the current surgery operators Operose Health.

Dr Abdullah’s family attended the unveiling alongside patients and former colleagues who continue to speak of his kindness, empathy and unwavering commitment to care.

Margaret Mullane, MP for Dagenham and Rainham, said:
“Dr Abdullah was a valued member of the Rainham and Wennington community and adored by many. He loved his work and always put patients first. I am glad we are able to commemorate him with this wonderful plaque, as this way, his life and work will never be forgotten.”
