Elm Park burst into full festive magic this year as hundreds of families braved the chilly but mild winter evening to watch the much-loved Christmas light switch-on. The atmosphere was buzzing, with laughter, music and twinkling lights filling the town centre.

Children were spoilt for choice with a huge range of free activities funded by money raised through Elm Park Regeneration, local sponsors and raffles. Santa’s Grotto inside the Eye Clinic was a favourite, alongside festive flower arranging at Elm Park Florist, face painting, balloon modelling, a magician, a teacup carousel and a brilliant performance from the Lightnin’ Drama group.

Entertainment continued throughout the evening with music from the Benhurst School Choir, Bedrock Radio and the much-loved Flukes ukulele band. Stilt walkers and festive characters wandered through the crowd, delighting excited youngsters and parents looking for the perfect Christmas photo moment.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Barry Mugglestone proudly took centre stage to switch on the Christmas lights, telling the crowd how special the moment felt as someone who has lived in Elm Park his whole life. He was joined by Mr Battu, Mr Bartley of Development Solutions, Reverend Amanda Keighley and Ray Button.

The night also included the annual Christmas competitions. Independent judge Phil Bartley selected the winners for Best Dressed Shop Assistant, awarded jointly to Andy’s Barbers and Richard House, and Best Christmas Window, awarded to the Eye Clinic.

Phil said: “I was honoured to judge the competition and think Elm Park is a strong community. I particularly liked the window in Eye Clinic as it encouraged children to decorate baubles and add to the tree. I commend everyone for taking part and hope the competition continues to grow.”

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who supported or sponsored the event, donated raffle prizes or helped behind the scenes — including the local Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Hornchurch and Upminster Sea Cadets who ensured the evening ran safely.

Elm Park once again proved it knows how to do Christmas — community spirit, local pride and festive magic shining brighter than ever.
