Many people are low in magnesium, but why is it so important? Restless legs in the evening, heavy fatigue and feeling overly stressed can all be linked to low magnesium levels. Believe it or not, magnesium is one of the body’s most essential minerals, yet it’s one many people don’t get enough of.

So what exactly is magnesium and what does it do? Magnesium is an electrolyte that supports nerve function, muscle relaxation and energy production. It plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure, maintaining a steady heartbeat and supporting healthy bones. It also helps the body manage stress by supporting the nervous system and can improve sleep quality, especially for those who struggle to switch off at night.

Magnesium is also needed for the activation and metabolism of vitamin D, which is especially important during the winter months when sunlight exposure is low.

For women, magnesium is particularly important for:

  • Managing PMS symptoms and menstrual cramps
  • Supporting bone density, especially as they move into perimenopause and menopause
  • Reducing anxiety and improving sleep
  • Supporting healthy muscle function and energy levels

For men, magnesium plays a key role in:

  • Supporting muscle recovery and strength
  • Maintaining healthy testosterone levels
  • Reducing stress and improving sleep
  • Supporting heart health and blood pressure regulation

Magnesium can be found in foods such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, avocados and dark chocolate. Despite this, many people still fall short due to modern diets, stress, caffeine intake and poor sleep, all of which can deplete magnesium levels.
