Why Stress Can Drain Your Vitamin C Levels – And How To Restore Them This Winter.
Health and Wellbeing Coach Francesca Lilleystone continues her weekly column in the Havering Daily.
When stress takes over, your body pays the price in more ways than you might realise. One of the first nutrients to take a hit is vitamin C.
During periods of intense or prolonged stress, the body moves into a constant state of alert, and the adrenal glands work around the clock. This ongoing pressure can drain your vitamin C stores far more quickly than usual, leaving your immune system weakened just when you need it the most in the cold winter months.
Although adrenal fatigue is not medically recognised as a formal condition, many people experience the symptoms. Life can keep us in a cycle of pressure, responsibility and worry, often without an opportunity to rest or unwind. As the adrenal glands work harder, vitamin C becomes an essential tool they use to support the stress response. Over time this can leave the body running low.
Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, which means it moves through the body quickly and any unused amounts are flushed out. Regular top ups are therefore essential. The functions of vitamin C are truly remarkable. It supports collagen production for skin, hair and joint health. It strengthens the immune system and helps wounds heal. It acts as a powerful antioxidant to protect the body from damage. It also plays a key role in supporting brain health by helping chemical messengers such as serotonin and dopamine function correctly.
For those who need iron, vitamin C also helps the body absorb it more effectively. When vitamin C becomes depleted, people may notice bleeding gums, frequent colds, lower immunity, feeling run down or even signs of anaemia. These symptoms are often overlooked but can be early warnings that your levels are not where they should be.
The good news is that it is very easy to replenish. Fruit and vegetables are packed with vitamin C and are absorbed quickly by the body. Oranges, apples, kiwi fruit, peppers, broccoli and tomatoes are all excellent choices. Combining vitamin C rich foods with healthy fats can also support absorption. A simple and delicious example is avocado with tomatoes and olive oil, whether on toast or tossed into a salad. Tomatoes and avocado together are nutritional powerhouses.
As we move through the winter months, the body is naturally more susceptible to illness and fatigue. If you are experiencing chronic stress or feel constantly exhausted, it may be worth checking your vitamin C levels. With the right foods and some consistent self care, you can support your immune system, improve energy levels and help your body cope better with life’s challenges.
