Update: Man In Custody After Hitting Woman with Car Then Turning A Taser on Locals in Upminster
A man remains in custody after being arrested for possession of a firearm, grievous bodily harm, causing injury via a road traffic collision and failure to stop following an incident yesterday afternoon in Upminster.
The shocking scenes were reported first in the Havering Daily as eyewitnesses described how the male drove into a woman, knocking her over and then crashing into nearby bollards and dustbins on Stewart Avenue. The male, believed to be in his 20s, then tried to flee the scene with his bag, but was prevented by members of the public who came to the woman’s support. It was at this point that the man got out a taser and began tasering people as he tried desperately to flee the scene. One man tried to prevent him from harming others with the taser and was injured, as others grabbed his bag to prevent him from running away.
The man then ran off towards Springfield Gardens, but returned for his bag. He was then arrested by officers who gave chase, with one officer hurling herself over a fence to apprehend the suspect.
A spokesperson for the Met Police told the Havering Daily:
“Officers responded to reports of a car failing to stop following a collision in Stewart Avenue, Upminster at around 16:20 on Tuesday, 11 November.
“A pedestrian, a woman in her 50s, was treated at the scene by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service. In a separate incident after the collision, a man also in his 50s, was injured by a non-police Taser. He too was treated by the London Ambulance Service. Neither him or the woman were taken to hospital.
“A man who is believed to be both the driver of the vehicle and the one who used the Taser remains in police custody. He was swiftly arrested nearby on suspicion of causing injury via road traffic collision, failure to stop, grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm.”
“Anyone with information relating to the incident is urged to contact the Met on 101, quoting 5184/11Nov. Local residents can expected to see an increase in police presence over the coming days.”
