Beam Park Labour Councillors Trevor McKeever and Matt Stanton joined New City College today to mark the opening of a state-of-the-art Highways Maintenance training facility at the Beam Park campus.

Developed in partnership with Kensons Highways, a local business based in the Beam Park area, the new outdoor learning space has been built to modern highways standards. Complete with street lighting, road markings, and signage, the facility provides a safe and realistic environment for students to gain hands-on experience in building and maintaining essential highway infrastructure.

Councillor McKeever highlighted the importance of practical learning:
“As someone who started out through an apprenticeship, I know first-hand the value of learning by doing. This approach can make a real difference for people who thrive outside traditional classroom settings. It’s fantastic to see this initiative moving forward, and we hope it will create more opportunities for local residents.”

Councillor Stanton emphasised the wider impact of highways on community development:
“Highways are often undervalued as a career and as part of our infrastructure, but everything we want to deliver—housing, employment, leisure—depends on roads, cycleways, and footpaths. It was great to speak with Kensons’ team about sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), which help keep water out of surface drains longer and reduce flood risk. These innovations show how the sector is evolving to meet future challenges.”

The new facility represents a significant investment in skills development and sustainability, ensuring that local people can access high-quality training for careers that keep our communities connected and resilient.
