Exclusive: Victory! Margaret Mullane MP Saves Dagenham Police Station Front Counter From Closure.
The Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham has saved Dagenham Police Station front counter from closure.
At the end of July, the Metropolitan Police announced plans to close 18 of its 37 front counters in London in a desperate attempt to balance a £260 million budget shortfall. The front counter at Dagenham Police Station was put on the chopping block for a third time
Margaret mobilised the community, raised a campaign, secured the support of the Labour Council, and collected thousands of petition signatures. Today, news has broken that the campaign was successful, and the front counter at Dagenham Police Station will remain open for residents to report crime and speak to officers face-to-face.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “This outcome is a testament to people power and the strength of the campaign highlighted just how concerned local people in my constituency are about the levels of crime in the area. I want to put my thanks on record to everyone that supported the campaign, whether you were one of the 100 businesses who put up a poster, collected signatures on your street, did a video on social media, or simply added your name alongside 3000 others on the petition. This is what we can achieve when we work together.”
“I would also like to thank the Metropolitan Police for listening to the strength of feeling in our community and revising their proposal to close the front counter. I know they are facing huge budget pressures, and the decision could not have been easy in the first place.”
She added: “Whilst we have had another monumental victory against the odds there is still a long way to go in terms of community safety. I am always raising my concerns about officer numbers, and the abstraction of the ones we have, in parliament and am working hard to get a better policing offer for Dagenham and Rainham.”
