On Sunday, 12 October, an off-duty Detective Chief Inspector witnessed a man shoplifting in a store on Eastern Avenue, Romford.

Unbeknown to DCI Mitchell, at the time, the same man had been targeting the store for several weeks, committing multiple thefts.

While off duty, the officer detained the suspect and called for colleagues to attend and assist.

A 36-year-old man from Rush Green was subsequently arrested and later charged with theft offences. He appeared at North East Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty and was fined and given a community order.

The off-duty officer, Detective Chief Inspector Mitchell, successfully helped address the issue of theft within the retail park. The store manager has expressed thanks to the officers involved for swiftly resolving the matter.

This incident highlights how police officers are never truly off duty — always alert, always ready to act. Great work by DCI Mitchell and the local policing team.
