Councillor Hits Out At Digital ID-“This Is Not About Illegal Immigration But Government Coercive Control And Must Be Stopped.”
Emerson Park Councillor Slams Plans for Digital ID: “This is About Government Control”
Emerson Park Ward Councillor David Godwin has spoken out strongly against the government’s proposed plans for digital ID cards.
Speaking to The Havering Daily, Councillor Godwin said:
“I saw The Havering Daily has an article concerning councillors’ opinions in regard to digital ID. I have signed the online UK Government and Parliament petition ‘Do not introduce digital ID cards.’ We already have enough forms of identification — birth certificate, National Insurance number, driving licence, marriage certificate, passport — so why do we need another?”
He continued:
“We as a country can ill afford to waste more money on another folly. This has nothing to do with controlling mass illegal immigration — it’s about a centralised database and how it can be used, or abused.”
Councillor Godwin went on to describe the proposal as an example of “government coercive control” that must be stopped.
In a recent survey by The Havering Daily, councillors across the borough were asked for their views on digital ID. Many chose not to respond, but those who did were firmly opposed to the idea.
Councillor Godwin added that he is “appalled” by the proposal and will continue to speak out against it on behalf of Havering residents.
