Police officers face record levels of abuse and it needs to stop.

Police officers across London and the wider UK are facing growing levels of verbal and physical abuse, much of it vile, unnecessary and utterly unacceptable.

There is an endless level of frustration across the country, and sadly, it is often directed at police officers. The levels of verbal and physical abuse being thrown towards them are shocking and should never be normalised.

A recent tweet captured this problem comprehensively, showing the “utter trash” that officers are forced to endure on a daily basis. Let’s be clear: this is not acceptable. Police officers are people doing a job. Hurling vile abuse at them is nothing short of disgusting, and it reflects far more on the individual shouting it than on the officer targeted.

There are, of course, occasions where officers are put in difficult situations they arguably shouldn’t have been sent into. But the blame for that rests with others, not the frontline officers left to face the fallout.

The rhetoric in the tweet, which attacked an officer’s appearance, was nothing less than sewage. The irony is this: if that same individual suddenly found themselves in danger, that very officer would likely be the first to rush to their aid, regardless of the bile that had been directed at him.Statistics back up what officers are experiencing: the number of assaults against police officers continues to rise every year. Officers often go from one traumatic incident — involving a murder, a rape, or another serious crime — to being abused by a member of the public over something as petty as their moustache.

“You leave home in the morning never knowing what you’ll be called to — or whether you’ll make it back.” That reality deserves respect, not ridicule.

Of course, not everyone agrees with the decisions police officers have to carry out. But disagreement is no excuse for vile, personal abuse. Throwing such insults only highlights the ignorance of the abuser — not any fault of the officer.

Perhaps those so quick to sneer should try doing the job themselves. The truth is, most wouldn’t last a single shift and of course, wouldn’t even consider doing it.

Please see the tweet in question below:

  • In England and Wales, there were 45,907 assaults on police officers recorded in the year to March 2024 — that’s around 125 every single day.
  • Of these, 34,428 were assaults without injury (up 15.5% on the previous year) and 11,479 were assaults with injury (up 8.4%).
  • In London, the Met Police recorded 7,966 attacks on officers in 2023, up from 7,719 in 2022.
  • Met Commissioner said there are 18 physical attacks on police every day in London, with two officers seriously injured every week.
