Havering Council has installed solar panels at nine of its corporate sites as part of its drive towards a greener and more sustainable future.

The sites, including libraries, community centres and Romford Town Hall, are already generating renewable energy through Solar PV systems. They are connected to the Passive Web Portal, which tracks electricity generation, cost savings and carbon offset in real time.

Together, the installations are expected to produce 274,145 kWh of electricity each year. This will save the Council around £76,000 and cut carbon emissions by 175 tonnes, the equivalent electricity use of about 100 homes.

Sites currently using solar power include Avelon Centre, Yew Tree Centre, Hornchurch Library, Rainham Library, Romford Town Hall, MyPlace, Central Library, Bedford’s Park Depot and Harold Hill Library.

More upgrades are planned, including a 60 kW system at the central depot and an expansion of the Romford Town Hall system to 90 kW. Once complete, annual savings could reach £100,000.

Councillor Natasha Summers, Cabinet Lead for Climate Change and Housing Need, said: “This is a fantastic step forward in our commitment to tackling climate change and reducing our carbon footprint. By investing in solar energy across our estate, we’re not only cutting emissions but also saving money. These projects support our wider environmental aims and demonstrate how local government can lead by example in the transition to a low-carbon future.”

The investment is part of the Council’s wider Climate Change Action Plan.
