St Alban’s Conservative Action Team Welcome New Playground Improvements at Hylands Park.
St. Alban’s Ward Conservative Action Team Councillor Judith Holt and Martin Firmstone are delighted to see the start of the playground improvements and building of the accessible new play equipment in Hylands Park, Hornchurch.
“Already, some of the wooden balancing structures are in place and the new pathways laid to allow wheelchair access,” reported Mr Firmstone. ” There’s a large green multi-unit with a climbing ladder and a double width slide, plus low-level equipment for easy physical access. It’s also pleasing to see there will be multi-sensory panels, bright colours and visual clues, to allow children with mental and learning disabilities to enjoy their play.”
Last September, Councillor Holt was asked by Mr Richard Cottam, the Parks Development Manager at Havering Council, to write a letter of support seeking a grant from Veolia Environmental Trust to improve and modernise the play equipment, in order to make it more accessible and inclusive for SEND children. The Ward Councillor helped, also, by asking for and forwarding residents’ opinions – and, on 30th May this year came the good news that the application had been successful!
“We would like to extend a big thank-you to Richard Cottam for his hard work and perseverance in securing this funding,” declared Councillor Holt. “Last year, I opposed strongly Havering Council’s plans to cut school transport for SEND children. It is so important they have the same opportunities as all children. An look at initial Facebook comments indicates some of their parents are very pleased with the work taking place at Hylands Park.”
Judith and Martin are looking forward to seeing the work completed. “It will be lovely to see the children’s happy faces in their new playground. Part of us wishes we were youngsters again so we could join in!”
