Today marks Emergency Services Day, a moment to stop and thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. Here in Havering, we are fortunate to have some of the most dedicated officers and firefighters across London—people who go above and beyond the call of duty every single day.

Policing across the capital faces enormous challenges, yet our officers in Havering consistently prove their commitment to the community. From frontline officers responding to life-threatening incidents, to the Safer Neighbourhood Teams working closely with local groups, their contribution is invaluable. Our PCSOs, such as Sue in Romford, Angela in Hornchurch, and Brian and Julia in Rainham, are a constant presence in our wards, building trust and support with residents.

Special recognition goes to Sergeant Tanner from Havering Joint Task Force, whose outstanding record of success and tireless work ethic is a testament to his dedication. A special shout out to Rainham’s Sergeant Basit who works brilliantly with his community.Leadership from Chief Inspector Routley and Inspector Connolly also ensures that both residents and officers are supported—a vital balance in community policing.

A huge thank you must also go to our firefighters, who this summer have faced endless wildfires and continue to tackle the smouldering challenges of Launders Lane. Despite cuts and difficult conditions, they remain by our side, often at great personal risk. Fire Chief Paul McClenaghan stands as a real community hero, embodying the bravery and commitment of his teams.

And let us not forget our ambulance staff—true lifesavers who are always there when we need them most, often in the most critical of moments.

Today, we say thank you to our entire blue light family—police, fire, and ambulance services. They are the people who step forward when we need them, often putting themselves in danger so the rest of us can feel safe. Havering is proud of you.
