Havering Families Share Their Histories To Commemorate Victory Over Japan Day.
To commemorate Victory in Europe and Victory over Japan Day, the volunteers of Havering Museum have gathered stories from families illustrating the contributions of our veterans.
The exhibition reflects on WWII, contributions and the losses experienced by members of different military services, merchant seamen, civilians and the repatriation of our service men and women. An example of some of the stories was when Harry Irons, Bomber Command said. “The most memorable mission was operation Manna, when we flew over Holland to drop food to the starving people. We flew so low we could see their smiling faces and they were saving.”
Many veterans never shared the experiences with their families but like Anne Haidar, she discovered that her father, Joseph K Walker, was a wartime spy. He initially joined the RAF, Air Sea Rescue, in 1940, aged 17. He quickly found that he had an aptitude for deciphering and decoding messages. By 1942 he was stationed in Palestine and by 1943 he was sent on secret missions to Bodrum Turkey, as a spy. Joseph’s story and photographs feature in this exhibition.
Anne told the Havering Daily: “It is remarkable to find out that my father was a wartime spy and we never knew anything about it for over 50 years. It is great that I can share his story with the Museum.”
Ellen Owen, the exhibition facilitator said “It is truly inspiring that Anne and other veterans and their families have come forward to share their experiences. Our exhibition captures and respectfully commemorates the contributions and suffering on all sides.”
The exhibition runs until 17 September 2025. As the Museum is run by volunteers we are only able to open Wednesday – Friday, 11:00 – 16:30. It is recommended that people check the accessibility of the exhibition before visiting the museum. Full details on www.haveringmuseum.org.uk – 01708 766571.
