Romford MP Urges All Havering Councillors To Back ‘Operation Raise The Colours’ And Keep Our Flags Flying.
“I am writing to you to express my dismay upon hearing reports that our national flags – the Union Jack and the Cross of St. George – are being removed by local authorities all over the country, including nearby boroughs such as Tower Hamlets.”–Andrew Rosindell MP
Andrew Rosindell M.P., Member of Parliament for Romford, has written to the Leader of Havering Council, Councillor. Ray Morgon, urging the local authority to safeguard the public display of national and county flags across the borough.
In his letter, Mr. Rosindell expressed concern over reports that flags such as the Union Jack and the Cross of St. George are being removed by local authorities in various parts of the country, including nearby Tower Hamlets. He stated, “I am writing to you to express my dismay upon hearing reports that our national flags – the Union Jack and the Cross of St. George – are being removed by local authorities all over the country, including nearby boroughs such as Tower Hamlets.”
Mr. Rosindell emphasised the importance of these flags as enduring symbols of national and local identity: “I feel strongly that our national and indeed, county flags should be a proud and permanent symbol of our nation’s heritage and that patriotism is something local authorities should encourage, not cancel.”
He further highlighted the significance of the Union Jack, the Cross of St. George, and the Essex flag in fostering community pride: “The Union Jack represents the unity of our nation, while the Cross of St. George reflects our English identity, just as the flag of Essex represents our historic local county identity. All are symbols that inspire pride and belonging in residents across Romford and Havering more widely.”
Calling for Havering to lead by example, Mr. Rosindell urged the Council to confirm that it will not remove flags displayed safely and respectfully in public spaces.
“I am therefore asking you to confirm that Havering Council will not remove any Union Jack, Cross of St. George or Essex flag that are attached to lampposts or on public locations, provided they are installed safely and with respect?”
He also raised concerns about the financial and social implications of such removals stated, “With Havering Council so short of cash, it would not only be a waste of resources to do this, but would also be seen by many, including myself, as very divisive.”
Mr. Rosindell concluded his letter with a call for unity and pride:
“I look forward to your response and to working with you to ensure Havering continues to fly our flags with pride!”
