A dedicated team of volunteers from across Havering have come together to support local families through the school holidays as part of the Havering Food Alliance Pantry Pack Project. The first packs were successfully delivered last week, with weekly distributions now taking place throughout the summer holidays.

The Pantry Pack Project is designed to ensure no child in Havering goes hungry during the school break. Each week nutritious food packs are assembled and delivered to families facing food insecurity, providing ingredients for balanced meals and healthy snacks. The initiative runs until the end of August, helping bridge the gap left by the absence of school meals.

The project is powered by the generosity, energy, and commitment of local volunteers, who sort, pack, and distribute the food items each week. Their contribution is essential to ensuring the smooth delivery of this ambitious programme.

“This project is a real testament to the power of community,” said Tony Lowe CEO of Tapestry who oversee the Havering Food Alliance. “It simply wouldn’t be possible without the amazing volunteers who give their time and care to help make a difference to local families.”

Each Pantry Pack contains carefully selected ingredients, including wholegrain pasta, tinned vegetables, fresh fruit, breakfast items, and recipe cards that encourage healthy eating habits and family-friendly meal preparation.

The initiative has been developed collaboratively by Tapestry, Havering Food Alliance, schools, community groups, and public agencies working to create a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable food system in the borough. Packs are delivered to  community centres and schools, and are available to collect from Rainham Food Pantry at the Rainham Community Hub

As the summer continues, the Havering Food Alliance welcomes additional volunteers, food donations from individuals and companies and donations. (Just £15 provides a child with healthy meals and snacks for a week)Those interested in getting involved or supporting the project with food can contact the team by phone at 01708796600 or email at hello@tapestry-uk.org or visit www.tapestry-uk.org
