Councillor David Taylor is calling on Havering Council to urgently step up enforcement against fly-tipping, following regular tipping at the Como St car park.

Como Street has become a regular site for fly-tipping and issues with littering, with the car park left unsecure and regularly targetted by people emptying mattresses and household items. Meanwhile, residents have been regularly reporting litter strewn across pavements from waste left out ahead of collection days.

Councillor Taylor is calling on Havering Council to step up fly-tipping enforcement, after being told that there could be a 6 month wait for enforcement cameras to be moved to the site, as there are only a limited number of cameras available.

The Como St car park is the topic of much conversation amongst local residents, with council owned developer Mercury Land Holdings (MLH) set to buy and develop the site, paid for by a loan from Havering Council. Councillor Taylor believes that this should make it easier for enforcement to take place, and says he has also made the request to MLH. Local residents argue that the site appears to be purposefully left neglected, in order to justify development.

Councillor Taylor told the Havering Daily:

” I am reporting fly-tipping in this car park at least once a month, some months more than that. a 6 month wait, to potentially get enforcement cameras, is just not good enough.

Fly tipping is unsighlty, is threatening polluting the River Rom, and is costing taxpayers money. We shouldn’t be subsidising people’s lazy behaviour through our hard earned taxes. The council must send a strong message that they will not tolerate people treating our town this way.

As Havering are set to loan MLH millions, so that the developer can buy the site and put flats on it, I think they should require that this car park be made secure and tidied up in the meantime. The car park is close to the town centre and I am certain that it would be used more if it felt safer and cleaner.

Whilst I have written to the council an asked them to prioritise this site, I have also writen to the developer and hope to receive a positive response in the near future.

If I was about to spend a few million on a piece of land then I’d want it to be safe and presentable. This is a chance for the developer to prove that they care about the local community and not just profit”.
