“Schools Full, Hospitals Overflowing — But More Homes Are Coming Anyway! Is Our Infrastructure on the Brink?”
Havering Faces Concrete Crisis: Infrastructure Crumbling Under Housing Pressure
We are being told that there is a desperate housing shortage across London and that areas like Havering could soon have their greenbelt built on due to this. However, one question often asked is: does Havering and London itself have enough infrastructure to support this mass housing being brutally pushed through?
The answer appears to be no.
We know many schools across the borough are oversubscribed. GPs across Havering often have very long queues before you can see a General Practitioner, and local hospital Queen’s is believed to be frequently at maximum capacity, with the A&E department seeing far more people than planned. In fact, according to NHS figures, Queen’s Hospital regularly operates at over 95% capacity in its emergency department.
So now we see a huge shift across the country to push through endless housing—housing that will destroy our already fragile ecosystems and the remaining greenbelt. But where is the building of vital services such as hospitals, schools, parks, and other such necessities?
As a matter of fact, the local NHS trust that runs Queen’s is having to make £60 million in cuts.
We are not seeing the mass building of schools, surgeries or public infrastructure. We are, however, witnessing a housing epidemic being forced through with little thought for the long-term consequences.
Will our infrastructure support this?
The answer clearly seems to be no.
With greenbelt land in Havering under threat, the borough could lose its character, wildlife, and community space all in the name of development—without any sign that the basic facilities needed to support this expansion are being put in place.

In 2023, approximately 1.7% of the UK’s total GDP came from housebuilding alone, plus the investmentvalue. That’s why we see this continually push.
