Experience Kim’s Video: A Special Screening at Lumiere
Fresh from its opening, new cinema Lumiere which was saved by the public through a crowdfunder (after Premiere Cinema closed suddenly in August) has its first major event on Tuesday April the 29th at 6:40 PM. The event will consist of a special screening of Kim’s Video a documentary based on a real life video shop through the 80s, that has recently become incredibly popular with fans that celebrate the VHS era. The documentary celebrates the growth, demise and the alternative use for the video libraries content that ultimately leads to conspiracy. Part documentary part heist drama Kim’s Video has been setting the world alight wherever it’s screened.
For Lumiere this is its first major event, the film has shown at two other cinemas outside of the festival circuit and includes a live Q&A with Mr Kim of Kim’s video and the film makers Ashley Sabin and David Redmon. As part of the screening attendees are invited to bring old original VHS tapes that they may no longer want and swap them for other tapes, those videotapes will then be sent on to the next venue and eventually across the world creating the ultimate eclectic selection of VHS tapes and continuing the story of Kim’s video.
In addition, Lumiere cinema’s trustees are creating a pop-up video library for people to peruse the shelves looking for some classic video shop memories. There will also be other live activities throughout the night, to get the retro vibes really flowing.

Trustee Spencer hawken who began the crowdfunder campaign to save the cinema said “These sorts of activities are usually saved only for the West End and it’s really exciting to be doing something like this in Romford. As Romford Film Festival we screened the film last year and it was incredibly popular but now it’s doing this world tour with the live video shop element I think it adds a whole new dimension, and I think it’s quite exciting for the community. This was the sort of experience that we had in mind when we said we would create something that is completely different for this area, a successful screening of a movie such as this will bring a variety of other events through the same agency to Romford and as a result really diversify the film offering for the town”.
Lumiere operates like a conventional cinema where you can just walk in and pay £6.99 a ticket or if you become a member which costs £30 per year and covers your entire family you can get your viewing reduced to £4 each for standard movie viewing such as this and 10% off all concessions. Special event screenings like Six the Musical and the Andre Rieu 75th birthday party which screened last week sell to members for almost half the price of other cinemas throughout the UK and are at least £5 cheaper for non-members. The £30 membership fee goes towards improving the venue and because Lumiere runs as a charitable co-operative any profits made at the end of any financial year are returned to its members as credits to their accounts.
