London Youths Charged In Connection With Southend Knife Brawls Last Summer.

The scenes of large gangs of youths armed with knives and machetes fighting in Southend, angered many last year.

Youths took to the seaside, not for a day out sadly, but to embark in violent disorder and knife brawls that left the local community furious.

Nine people had so far been charged and now, a tenth person involved in the shocking incident, has been charged in connection with the far-reaching investigation.

On July 30 last year, officers responded within minutes of reports of people with weapons on the seafront, swiftly arresting eight men and boys aged between 14 and 18. 

They were subsequently charged and put before the courts.

On 20 August last year, Essex Police arrested a ninth male in connection with the incident, securing charges against him. 

All nine are due to stand trial this July.

As a result of continuing work led by our Serious Crime Directorate, officers arrested an 18-year-old man, from Stratford, on Friday 28 March. 

Hamza Dinbil, 18, of Corporation Street, Stratford, has subsequently been charged with violent disorder and possession of a bladed article in a public place. 

He appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 29 March, where he was remanded in custody until a further hearing at Basildon Crown Court on 28 April. 

Nine teenagers have appeared in court in connection with the investigation into the incident of violent disorder in Southend.

Their appearances follow a swift response into reports of people brandishing weapons on the seafront on Tuesday 30 July.

Officers were on the scene within minutes, making a number of arrests.

At Basildon Crown Court on Thursday 3 October those charged in connection with this investigation entered a range of pleas:

  • Tyler Omo-Irogho, 18, of Clarendon Road, Watford, admitted assaulting an emergency worker, but denied violent disorder, conspiring to commit GBH, wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.
  • Michael King, 18, of Crescent Road, London, admitted violent disorder and conspiring to commit GBH, but denied wounding with intent.
  • Mekai Brown, 18, of Higham Road, Woodford Green, admitted violent disorder but denied conspiring to commit GBH and wounding with intent.
  • A 17-year-old boy, from London, denied violent disorder, conspiring to commit GBH, wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.
  • A 16-year-old boy, from London, admitted violent disorder and possession of a prohibited firearm, but denied attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent, conspiring to commit GBH and wounding with intent.
  • A 17-year-old boy, from London, admitted violent disorder and possession of a bladed article, but denied conspiring to commit GBH and wounding with intent.
  • A 16-year-old boy, from Basildon, denied violent disorder, conspiring to commit GBH, wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article.
  • A 17-year-old boy, from Woodford Green, admitted possession of a bladed article, but denied violent disorder, conspiring to commit GBH, wounding with intent.
  • A 14-year-old boy, from Pitsea, admitted violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon, but denied conspiring to commit GBH and wounding with intent.

All nine will now face a trial, set to be held at the same court on 20 January next year.
