Tributes Paid As Former Mayor Passes Away.

Tributes have been paid to Councillor John Mylod who sadly died on Friday 28 February.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Councillor Mylod’s family came to Britain when he was six months old. He grew up in Ilford and lived in Dagenham, Cranham and Upminster. 

He was married for many years to his wife Patricia, who also served on the Council. He leaves a daughter and three granddaughters. 

Councillor Mylod spent two years in National Service in the 1950s and later worked for the Ford Motor Company and a number of Local Authorities. 

He was a founder member of the Institute of Municipal Safety Officers, and General Secretary and founder member of Institution of Occupational Health & Safety Practitioners. He was also the founding Chairman of the Police Cadets.

He took early retirement and was first elected to Havering Council in May 1994 when he topped the poll in the Saint Andrews Ward, standing as a Hornchurch Residents’ Association candidate.

He was then re-elected six times and served continuously, always representing the Saint Andrews Ward, while at the Council. 

John also served as Mayor of Havering on three occasions. On the second occasion, he became the first Mayor of Havering to be elected through a virtual vote due to the restrictions put in place by the COVID pandemic.

He was awarded the Freedom of the Borough on 4 December last year.

Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“I was sad to learn of John’s death.

“John was well known to many residents of Havering and served his residents in Saint Andrews Ward well over many years. 

“On behalf of all Members, I want to convey our sincere condolences to all of John’s family and friends.”

Tributes will be paid at the next Full Council meeting on Wednesday 26 March 2025.

Former Mayor and Beam Park Councillor Trevor McKeever told the Havering Daily:

“I was sadden to hear the news of the passing of former councillor and former Mayor John Mylod.
It was John that passed over the robes to myself when I became Mayor of Havering in 2022, despite our political differences, John would always give me advice on the Mayoralty and protocols.
Our thoughts and prayers are with John‘s family at this time, may his soul rest in peace.”
