On Monday 20 January The Mercury was filled with fun, dancing and laughter as Havering community groups hosted by The Mercury’s Breakfast Club and Redbridge, Barking and Havering Age UK Di’s Diamonds came together to chat, enjoy a hot drink, cake and a dance, they celebrated by coming together as they enjoyed songs and music from local artist Joel aka @grimm_dreamurr. The afternoon was enjoyed by all and Amanda Events co -ordinator from Di’s Diamonds said; “ The Diamonds really enjoyed it and commented on how uplifting it was, how lovely. Some of the members attending haven’t been out let alone danced for months due to ill health so that was so good to see. I just wanted you to know how appreciated it was and the singer was really nice, not too loud and happy to mix with members and play requests.

Thanks again to The Mercury”.

Whilst there are no scientific studies that back up the concept of ‘Blue Monday’, January can be a particularly challenging month.

December is often full of events, festive fun, and gifts. When normality resumes in January, this can negatively affect our mental health. Some of us may experience Seasonal Affective Disorder which can result in low mood, fatigue and changes to sleeping or eating habits. Additionally, activities that are usually beneficial for our mental health, such as exercising and spending time outdoors in sunlight, can be harder to do when the days are shorter and colder.

Depression and other mental health conditions last longer than a ‘ one day event’, and our mental health can flucate in different ways on any day of the year. We believe that mental health and wellbeing should not be minimised by the Blue Monday myth.

The Mercury hosts a range of clubs that are inclusive, support the community and peoples wellbeing throughout the year including, the

Monday morning Breakfast Club every week 10am – 12pm midday hosted in Della Continental where you can take part in a host of free activities including crafts, painting, knitting, guest speakers and more, simply turn up and your good to go!

The Three Art Thursday club is ran by local artists and is a place for all ages to get into drawing and creativity. It is free to join and takes place on the third Thursday of the month between 2pm – 5:30pm. It starts with a calm watercolour class and then turns into an after school drawing activity where families can draw together, using a range of materials. Whether you’re an artistic parent, you have a place to socialise and draw without the children being turned away, and if you have a creative child – they might just get you into drawing too! Open to all ages and abilities.

Marvin’s Kids Club is a free craft and activity club aimed at children, which takes place one weekend a month. All the activities are free and are assisted by our friendly team. You don’t have to register in advance to join in the fun, just turn up on the day. Enjoy a host of fun activities or crafts, please note children need their parent or carer to stay with them for the duration of the club.

Are you 17 – 24 years old and looking to socialise with others from the Havering LGBTQ+ community? Join a free social club which meets every first Tuesday of the month at The Mercury, Romford.
