Havering Conservative’s Elect New Council Group Leader.
At a specially convened Extraordinary General Meeting on Monday 20 January, the Havering Council Conservative Group elected Councillor Michael White as its new Group Leader (and Leader of the Opposition) following the decision of Councillor Keith Prince AM to step down from this role.
In an internal statement to the Group, Cllr Prince said that due to changes in his own personal and professional circumstances, he felt that he was no longer in a position to provide the sufficient time and dedication needed to properly discharge the duties of this office.
He added that he felt that now was the best time to stand down so that a new Group Leader would be able to put their personal stamp on any Budget amendment, something which will form a central part of the manifesto going forward. It would also give the group at least eighteen months to establish themselves ahead of the next round of the London local elections.
Cllr Michael White was elected Leader with the unanimous support of those present, including Cllr Prince. No other Councillors were nominated for the position.
With his election as Group Leader, Cllr Michael White returns to the position after a ten-year hiatus. In his address to the Group, Cllr White he declared that;
“We have eighteen months to turn up the heat on this hapless Administration, and to demonstrate to the hard-pressed people of this Borough that there is an alternative to the debt-spiral approach that the HRA seems hell-bent on pursuing so enthusiastically.”
There were no other changes to Group officers.
