Barking, Dagenham and Havering Green Party fully support the campaign led by Jodie Satterley to stand firmly against the violence to our natural local environment represented by the woodland destruction that Network Rail have resumed without notice.

We appreciate that where particular trees pose a significant risk of harm – or if they are dead or diseased – targeted action may need to be taken. However, an extensive removal of woodland – and with it the obliteration of precious local wildlife and habitats – cannot in any obvious way be justified.

There are reports that Network Rail workers have been contracted to level entire areas in Emerson Park at once. It is important to highlight that Network Rail are acting in the absence of any consultation with local residents, and have no clear mandate to cut down so many trees.

Particularly during the climate crisis, there is an environmental imperative that essential biodiversity must be protected. However Network Rail’s seemingly reckless approach to the destruction of our shared trees – shared with each other, including many protected and unprotected species – flies in the face of the care and responsibility we expect to be afforded to our trees, wildlife and green spaces.

The Campaign to Stop Network Rail’s Environmental Destruction can rely on their local Green Party for support.

In solidarity,

Ruth Kettle-Frisby -Havering Green Party Co-ordinator
