This shows the community the importance of reporting crime and in this instance, the court has felt that for these crimes, a custodial sentence is necessary’-Chief Inspector Routley.

A woman has been handed a custodial sentence for attempted shoplifting.

Police were called at 10:23 on Wednesday 8 January to reports of shoplifting at a store on High Street, Hornchurch.

Officers attended and found security had detained a woman for stealing a number of items and for causing criminal damage to glass in the fire escape where she has attempted to leave the store.

Officers recovered a number of items belonging to the store.

A 38 year old woman was arrested for attempted theft, criminal damage and possession of cannabis.

Victoria Strong, 38, of no fixed abode pleaded guilty to the offences at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Thursday 9 January, where she was sentenced to 8 weeks imprisonment.

 Charlie Routley, Acting Chief Inspector for Havering Neighbourhood police teams said

“We are taking positive action against shoplifters and will put them before the courts.  I hope this shows the community the importance of reporting crime and in this instance, the court has felt that for these crimes, a custodial sentence is necessary.  We remain committed to making Hornchurch a safe place to live, work and visit”.
