The Mardyke Community Centre in Rainham hosted its annual Christmas meal for older residents in the area, with long-term sponsor Wanis International Foods (Tropical Sun) at the heart of the event’s success.

For years, Wanis has been a cornerstone of support for the Mardyke Community Centre, providing not only sponsorship for this cherished festive occasion but also ongoing assistance throughout the year. Their commitment has enabled the centre to continue its vital work for the local community.

The Christmas meal, which brings together older residents for a day of warmth, joy, and delicious food, was made possible by the tireless efforts of volunteers, including Wanis staff, local councillors, residents, and centre workers. Hawkins Butchers, another valued sponsor, generously provided the meat for the meal, further highlighting the power of community partnerships.

Guests enjoyed a three course meal provided for free by the centre.

Guests were treated to a heartwarming performance by Newtons Primary School Choir, who sang Christmas songs that filled the room with festive cheer. The day also featured a lively raffle, with prizes donated by the centre and local businesses, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

Jessica Grant and Sophie Norman, from a local school, volunteered their time to help.

Lesley Blowers, the centre manager and a driving force behind the event, expressed her gratitude for Wanis International Foods (Tropical Sun), Hawkins Butchers, and all the volunteers. “We’re so fortunate to have Wanis as a long-term partner. Their support goes beyond just this event; they help us create a sense of belonging for everyone who walks through our doors. Thank you Hawkins Butchers who generously donated all meat for the meal, and of course all of our lovely volunteers who we couldnt do this without.”

Volunteers including local councillors helped serve the guests

Lesley, who has volunteered at the centre for over 40 years, was recently awarded the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of her outstanding service. Her dedication has helped establish the Mardyke Community Centre as a vital hub for local residents, with sponsors like Wanis standing proudly by her side in supporting the centre’s initiatives.

Supporting the Mardyke Community Centre’s Christmas meal is an honour, and we’re proud to play a part in bringing people together during the festive season. It’s inspiring to see the dedication of Lesley and the team, and we’re thrilled to help make this event a success year after year.”

The event showcased not only the festive spirit but also the generosity and community focus of the centre and its supporters. Their ongoing contributions ensure the Mardyke Community Centre can continue to bring people together and spread joy, especially during the Christmas season.
