Margaret Mullane the Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham has visited Dagenham Rugby Union Club last week to meet with officials to discuss ways to secure the future of the community amateur club based in Central Park Dagenham.

The club has occupied the current premises for 32 years and despite extensive works being carried out in the surrounding park area, the facilities, owned by the local authority and used by the rugby club, have fallen into disrepair.

Margaret met with the club committee and a senior director of Barking & Dagenham Council. The committee pointed out that the club has funded internal decoration and repairs, despite not owning the building and want to explore negotiating a lease with the Council.

However, in the meantime a significant number of repair issues were raised with the Council.

Margaret told the Havering Daily: “Dagenham Rugby Union Club and all other local grassroots sports clubs are vital to the cultural life of the community. It needs to be understood that the rugby club contributes to so many policy aims of the Council.”

Margaret added: “Raising funding is so crucial to local amateur sports and other clubs. I raised the question of whether the Council’s key partners, could be asked to make social value contributions.

I also discussed potential availability of grants from the Lottery and Sport England and have now forwarded documentation to Dagenham Rugby Union Club.

I will be keeping a close watch on developments with the club and wish them well for the future, on and off the pitch”
