Beam Park Councillors say litter needs a bigger solution.
Beam Park Labour Councillor Matt Stanton collected ten bags of litter from just 120 metres of New Road on Saturday morning alongside his ward colleague Councillor Trevor Mckeever, and emphasises it is time now that something changes.
“The first thing we need to say is that the street cleansing staff in Havering do a tremendous job with limited resources. The fact is that they can pick up every piece of litter they see, but they then have to go to the next street, or the next ward, and unfortunately between visits the amount of rubbish builds up again” Cllr Mckeever told the Havering Daily: “It’s unfortunate that a small minority of residents and visitors generate so much rubbish”.
Cllr Stanton wants other organisations in the community to join in keeping the area litter-free, “ultimately it’s not sustainable to ask that goodwill replaces properly funded services, so the main objective is to reduce the amount of litter being generated. We have written to the college in New Road, as well as our two primary schools, to ask what work they are doing with their pupils on the impact of littering. We’ve also asked the college to discuss organising a litterpick with students. We’ll be approaching the Council to discuss using the Restorative Justice Team too.”
