‘Our diverse heritage is our strength and as a community we have more in common than
that which divides us’-Margaret Mullane MP.

The Dagenham and Rainham MP has condemned the violence on our streets. Rainham has been targeted recently after the pigs heads incident and concerns that more violence could take place.

Margaret told the Havering Daily:

“I completely condemn the scenes unfolding on our streets, in towns and cities across our
country. This isn’t protest, it is mindless violence and has no place in our communities. The
Prime Minister and Home Secretary have been clear that those involved at any level will feel
the full force of the law. I have been in communication with the Borough Commander and
can categorically say that this deplorable behaviour will not be tolerated in Dagenham and Rainham.

Our diverse heritage is our strength and as a community we have more in common than
that which divides us. We have seen hate here before, and local people closed
the door on it in 2010.I fully support the immediate actions of Government but also recognise that there are underlying issues which need addressing. Part of our medium to long-term response must
be the rebuilding of public services and of our social fabric, things which underpin cohesion,
which have been hollowed out over 14 years of Tory Government, leaving
communities vulnerable to the influence of the far-right.

During what should have been a period of deep mourning following the tragic murder of
three children last week, the fires of division have been stoked up by those peddling the
politics of hate. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the
children, and with the community in Southport whose grief has been hijacked.
My heart also goes out to the families who now feel unsafe walking the streets where they
live. Innocent people have been attacked and buildings have been burned. I know people in
Dagenham and Rainham will be feeling worried but rest assured that the police remain
proactive and vigilant. In the coming days I will be speaking with the faith groups,
community, both local authorities, and the police to make sure people feel secure.

If any residents or religious communities in my constituency feel threatened, have
concerns, or need help, please reach out to me at margaret.mullane.mp@parliament.uk or 020 8984 7854.
