Labour Councillors for Beam Park ward and a representative from Margaret Mullane’s office, have met with council officials to discuss road safety.

Councillors Trevor Mckeever and Matt Stanton, and a representative from the office of Margaret Mullane MP, met with officers from Havering Council recently to discuss ongoing plans to improve road safety in the ward.

While problems at the junction of Marsh Way and New Road have persisted for years, the Beam Park councillors have persevered and pushed Havering into acting on residents’ concerns. A study of traffic movements has confirmed that a new dedicated right turn phase on the westbound carriageway is needed, and Havering will now be working with TfL to make the necessary changes to the traffic lights.

“This is fantastic news not only for those people using the junction but also for our hard-working emergency services. Every avoidable collision they don’t have to attend frees them up their time and resources”, Councillor Mckeever told the Havering Daily. “As a former firefighter, I have attended my fair share of traffic collisions and if we can do anything to reduce that number, we should”.

Cllr Stanton highlighted the forthcoming pilot of a ‘Walking bus’ for Newtons School in the ongoing fight against obstructive parking near the school. “From speaking to a lot of the parents who still think it’s acceptable to park dangerously near the school, a lot of them justify it to themselves by saying they are on their way to work. We hope they will consider the walking bus as a suitable alternative, keeping the streets around the school free from obstructions.”

Margaret Mullane MP was pleased to hear of the ongoing work by Labour councillors on this issue,. She told the Havering Daily:”Trevor and Matt are leading the way on road safety in their ward. These improvements, alongside the continuing lobbying we are carrying out for Beam Park station, demonstrate our commitment to creating communities where people are more confident in walking and cycling, creating a friendlier, safer, and cleaner environment.”
