Pensioners celebrate their 74 wedding anniversary with surprise party!

For once a good news story to start the day!

Sylvia Cunningham, 90, a resident at Gold Care Homes’ Hillside Nursing Home in Romford and her husband John, 100, celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary on 1st with a surprise party arranged by the care home and their family. 

Sylvia lives at Hillside Nursing Home in Harold Hill on a long-term basis, whilst John has stayed with the home as a respite resident in the past. The special couple, who say they instantly fell in love, married on June 28th, 1950, and have been in wedded bliss ever since, blessed with four beautiful children. 

Mr and Mrs Cunningham were surprised with a party, with live entertainment from a Neil Diamond Tribute Act, champagne and a homemade cake, all courtesy of the Hillside Nursing Home team, and spent the afternoon celebrating with staff, other residents and their family eating, drinking and dancing! 

The couple also received an anniversary card from King Charles III and queen consort, Camilla, making the day truly special indeed. 

Maribelle Law, Home Manager at Hillside said, “We are incredibly lucky to be able to celebrate moments like this with our residents and it’s a wonderful perk of the job!” She went on to say, “We simply adore Sylvia and John, and could not be happier for them to reach such a milestone in their marriage. We deeply appreciate their family allowing us to arrange and host this celebration and to be a part of it.”
