Rainham Muslim Trust, solely run through its volunteers, organised the largest Essex outdoor Eid-Al-Adha celebration on Sunday 16th June at Harris Academy in Rainham.

Muslims from Rainham and the wider Essex community came together to pray and celebrate with their family & friends. This is the second of the two Eids and holds great significance to Muslims, it preceeds the Hajj pilgrimage whilst also being celebrated for three days.

Media spokesperson for the volunteer group said.

‘It was truly an amazing day for the local Muslims in Rainham, who all came together for Eid and it really made our day to see the kids with their wonderful smiles on their face enjoying the ice cream and slush. They were also able to enjoy the bouncy castles and received gifts such as Eid activity books and sweet cones. In Rainham, we are lacking a mosque but this does not deter us. Our organisation has arranged weekly Friday prayers alongside Ramadan taraweeh prayers since 2021.’

Locals normally meet at the Mardyke Community Centre but this time due to the large scale celebrations, worshippers came together at the school field to be able to pray and celebrate as a community.

‘This has been our largest Eid event so far, we have returned to Harris Academy and during our events from 2022 we had around 600 attendees and last Sunday we surpassed this, it was close to 1,500! The Muslim population has grown significantly in Rainham in the last 5 years. We have formed our volunteer group to support our local community and enable us to worship together in a safe environment, which is usually catered through a mosque’

I’m so pleased the Muslim community feel able to pray openly in our community.

This is the type of inclusive Britain we should be.
