“Havering is poorer for this sad loss, but Rabbi Lee gave this borough more than it could ever give back to him-Zichrono Livracha, may his memory be a blessing”

Rabbi Lee Sunderland was a man who loved his community. Regardless of your different Faith, Rabbi Lee was always there to support you and reach out to you if you needed help. At the Havering Daily we worked frequently with Rabbi Lee and saw what a truly amazing person he was. He was always the first in our community to reach out to others to help and was at the many, many events organised for the community to add his support.

He was very much respected and loved by all. He had a huge personality that would capture the room as soon as he entered it. His words provided peace and kindness to all in Havering. He was a real community hero who would never say no when asked for his support.

Rabbi Lee you will be greatly missed.

Tributes have been paid by many in the community.

The Member of Parliament for Romford Andrew Rosindell, told the Havering Daily:

Earlier today, I learned of the heartbreaking news that Romford’s beloved Rabbi, The Rev. Lee Sunderland, had tragically passed away. This deeply sad day marks the loss of a remarkable individual who was more than a religious leader; he was a cherished friend and a steadfast advocate for the religious freedoms we hold dear. Rabbi Sunderland was a pillar of our community, dedicating his life to his faith and the fostering of unity amongst all people. His commitment to these principles has left an indelible mark on the community of Romford. Throughout my time as Member of Parliament, Rabbi Sunderland stood by my side, offering wisdom, support and friendship during the most challenging times. I owe him an immeasurable debt of gratitude for the advice he gave. As Honorary Vice-President of the Romford Conservative Association, Rabbi Sunderland brought not only leadership, but also his boundless energy and dedication. His contributions were invaluable, and his presence was a source of inspiration to us all who had the pleasure of listening to him speak.

Today, Romford mourns the loss of a true champion and a compassionate soul. Rabbi Lee Sunderland’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him and in the countless lives he touched. His memory will forever be a guiding light to remind us of the power of faith and friendship. We will miss him. Romford has lost a friend.”

Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Romford Andrew Achilleos told the Havering Daily:

“I was incredibly sad to hear of Rabbi Lee Sunderland’s passing. He has been a central figure in the Romford community, representing cohesion, and always speaking of the need for peace. As someone raised in the Jewish faith I know Rabbi Sunderland would have been a big part of the lives of local families, officiating over key moments and events. He will be greatly missed, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and members of the Romford and District Synagogue at this time.”

Conservative London Assembly Member for Havering and Redbridge, Councillor Keith Prince told the Havering Daily:

Rabbi Sunderland was an incredible person. He gave tireless service to the community.
It’s such a shock to learn of his passing it was only a few weeks ago that we were in North London having lunch together.

His demise will leave a huge whole in our Community and I cannot see how his larger than life personally and wicked sense of humour can be replaced

He was a one off and will be sorely missed by all. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and all those that knew him.

St Albans Ward Councillor Judith Holt told the Havering Daily:

“I am deeply sad to hear of the passing of Rabbi Lee Sunderland. I extend my sympathy to his family, friends and the Jewish Community in Havering. Rabbi Lee was a true pillar of the community, well-known, liked and respected by so many in Romford, and a regular presence at Civic Events. As at Hanukkah last year, he was not afraid to confront and challenge politicians, but at the same time was most welcoming and willing to talk to everyone, regardless of their faith or beliefs. Rabbi Lee will be much missed by all. God rest his soul.”

St Edwards Ward Councillor David Taylor told the Havering Daily:

“It was with deep sadness that I learnt about the passing of Rabbi Lee Sunderland, a giant in the community who came to be a close friend to myself and my wife.

Rabbi Lee was a true force for good in Havering. My memories of him will be his commitment to speaking out for minorities, his defence of Israel, and his robust challenge of politicians on all sides. Rabbi Lee didn’t shy away from challenging those in authority and he always encouraged me to carry out my role as a Councillor with integrity.

During speeches at Holocaust Memorial Day, Rabbi Sunderland challenged politicians to stop with the kind words and to replace them with action. I will never forget his remarks on holding a minute’s silence. “Why”, he said, “do we stand around for a minute doing nothing but remembering, when we would spend a minute actually doing something to make a difference”.

Through thick and thin, Rabbi Lee has been a confident and trusted source of wisdom for me. We enjoyed lively debates over dinner, on topics ranging from scripture to cooking. I will miss him dearly.

Havering is poorer for this sad loss, but Rabbi Lee gave this borough more than it could ever give back to him.

As we remember Rabbi Lee Sunderland, let us all carry forward the lessons he taught us. May his memory inspire us to live with integrity and compassion, wisdom and kindness.

Zichrono Livracha, may his memory be a blessing”.

The Romford MP Andrew Rosindell with the much loved Rabbi Lee.
