EXCLUSIVE: ‘They treated my mum like a piece of meat’-Daughter’s anger at ward treat of her mother at King George’s Hospital.
Julie’s mother Doreen was admitted to Fern Ward, King George’s Hospital at the end of January this year with fluid on her knee and six days later died of a bowel blockage. Julie from Rainham is appalled at the way her mother was handled at the Goodmayes hospital and the end of life care given to her.
“They handled her like a plate of meat and we saw other patients being treated so poorly too,” she told the Havering Daily. “When she first went in they took fluid from both her knees to be tested. We were never given these results back. Her arm had been fractured on the way to hospital, it was black and blue yet they continued to take blood pressure from her arm despite the state it was in. My mum had actually said to the staff there, ‘would you treat your mum like this?’. They replied no, so she asked them not to treat her in such a poor manner.”
Julie and her family were then told that Doreen had a bowel blockage and that there was nothing they could do.
“The end of life treatment was awful. My mum hand continuous student nurses around her. We asked for her to be placed in a separate room so she could pass away with her family by her side and they said no. They told us that only two people could be around her bed, so my brother never got to say goodbye. We had to say goodbye in a crowded ward whilst others laughed and joked we were saying goodbye.
“To top it off my mum died in pain. She kept crying out for help and wave her hands about for someone to help her. It really was awful. No one deserves to be treated like that. There was no care, no dignity for the elderly. The way they treat elderly patients is terrible.”
In response, BHRUT Kathryn Halford, Chief Nurse, said:
“We’d like to extend our condolences to the family of Doreen Ross and we’re sorry to hear that they were unhappy with the care she received at our hospital in January. We’d encourage them to get in touch with us directly so we can address their concerns.”
