‘Very distressing’-Residents anger over dead deer left in children’s play area by council.
“The poor animal was left there as council worker told me they had to clear the weeds first”.
Residents who walk their dogs in Raphaels Park in Romford were very distressed to see a dead deer lying in the children’s play area in the morning. It was reported to council staff at 5.30am and was still in the park at 11 am.
Joanna who walked her dogs yesterday morning and saw the deer, told the Havering Daily:”I don’t understand their priorities. I asked them about the deer and the manager there in charge told me that they had to finish the weeding first and then they would deal with it.
“At first he told me that he had to call ground maintenance, I looked round and there were lots of ground maintenance vans there, so pointed out that they were already there. And he said yes but they had to finish the weeding first.
“The poor animal was lying there and had been there since the morning. It was really distressing for everyone. Parents and children use the park as a cut through and would have seen it lying there.”
The deer had been covered with a blanket, but left in the children’s play area for hours.
Joanna finished: “His priorities were all wrong. The weeds had been there for ages, surely they could have waited a bit longer so that they could clear the deer first? He clearly seemed more interested in obtaining the green flag for the park instead of removing the poor deer. Very distressing.”
A Havering Council spokesperson told the Havering Daily: “
“Unfortunately, a dead deer was reported to the Parks Team within Raphaels Park at 8.15am this morning (16 May) by a park kiosk operator.
“The deer was initially covered ahead of its collection by ground maintenance crews and has since been transported to Bedfords Park to be stored ahead of its safe disposal.”
