“We need someone who will actually tackle knife crime, someone that will begin to work with us, campaigners and our communities right across London to stop this knife crime epidemic on the streets of the capital. We have had nothing but eight years of fake promises here in London and still the stabbings continue.”

Sue Hedges lost her son Ricky to knife crime in 2016, since then every day is spent campaigning against the carrying of knives and donating Daniel Baird bleed kits in the hope to save a life. Sue, from Havering is known throughout London for her endless campaigning and for being a voice against knife crime. After eight years of campaigning Sue, like so many other bereaved mothers, is tired.

“We are tired of begging with these politicians to actually do something. London is completely failed on knife crime. It has been years and years of fake promises, being told something would be done, when it clear isn’t. We have met the current Mayor and he sat and listened to our concerns and the changes we would like to see and as usual, nothing is done. Here we are in 2024 and the figures shown another increase in knife crime. Are we surprised? Of course not.

“It is time that someone actually does something and supports the London communities and works with campaigners and local police officers. Our youth need help and so far it is only campaigners and local policing teams that are actually supporting them. Knife crime will not go away we can all clearly see that.

“Youth centres have closed, opportunities for our youth have shrunk and crime as a result has increased. The cost of living crisis has made things even worse as teenagers watch their parents struggle to make a living and provide for their children.

“All these politicians need to come together and tackle knife crime now before more children die on our streets.”
